Today I have another batch of unlabeled MELVINS demo recordings, simply noted as "Melvins 1985 Demos". No tracklisting or additional information provided. Some of these may have been released officially, I have no idea currently, but once I have a tracklisting I'll update this post. For now, enjoy some old-timey lo-fi Melvins! - DH
EDIT: Added the tracklist, thanks to Rafi for that
Today's post is the November 1982 demo from 10 MINUTE WARNING. For those that don't know,. 10 Minute Warning were a Seattle punk band that started from the ashes of The Fartz. They were active for a couple years but within that time had some drastic lineup changes, as well as dramatic changes in style. Members of this band would later wind up in Mother Love Bone, The Accused, and Guns N Roses, as well as several others I'm likely overlooking. This is the early version of the group, and is quite ripping. I love this recording, and listen to it often. It speaks to me, haha, I would have loved to have seen these guys live. The 1984 version of 10MW is much different, and I'm personally not into it, I like this early stuff. All the recordings from this 1982 and 1983 versions of the band were recently released on a very limited LP, and I would have loved to buy it but I'm not a vinyl guy, but I would have grabbed it in just about any other format, even digital. Since it's only on LP, it's a no go for me. And because it's only on such a limited pressing of a single format, and is likely all gone now, I'll just post this anyway, though I do generally shy away from officially and widely released recordings.
For real though, stop reading and listen to this demo, it's so badass! - DH
Well, this MELVINS live recording won't win any awards for amazing quality, so expect a little roughness. If you are a big enough Melvins fan, though, then is perfectly fine considering how little live audio there is from Melvins in this time period. This may be incomplete as the audio stops abruptly after 20 minutes. Hopefully the rest of the show is recorded! What a lineup! Thanks to the MelvinsWiki for the flyers. - DH
MELVINS - November 23rd, 1985 @ Gorilla Gardens Rock Theater, Seattle, WA
A pretty decent audience recording of a very early MELVINS show, playing with an also new-ish Soundgarden, all opening for the mighty Husker Du! What a show! And check that setlist, it's a lot of great Melvins oldies. Anyone else with any old Melvins? Please share! - DH
EDIT:
I should clarify that it's a guess that this is that exact show. The tape has nothing written in it, but the J card says 2/27/85 Omni Room. There was no show on Feb 27th of 1985. There was a show on Feb 24th at the Omni Room, and there was a show that was on Jan 27th also at the Omni Room. It's very possible the month was written incorrectly, or the specific day was off by a few. We don't know the original taper, and there's nothing in the set to indicate which show it was. Perhaps someday the mystery will be solved.
