SOCIAL UNREST - Demo

Today's post is the demo from SOCIAL UNREST, a punk band from Hayward, CA I believe.  They are a pretty old band, having started sometime around the late 70's / early 80's, back when punk was still pretty fresh.  I don't remember when they broke up, but I know they reunited in the late 80's for shows, and I saw them play in the 2000's.  I have a set from them at the Gilman 20th anniversary show on here just follow the tags below this post.  This is a pretty decent demo, but I have no idea if it's had a wider release.  Discogs turned up nothing, but that could just be an error on my part.  Anyhoo, jam this in yer earholes!    - DH

7 SECONDS - Socially Fucked Up - 1981 Demo

Right on, this is something I'm pretty excited about, another 7 SECONDS demo, this time it's "Socially Fucked Up" from 1981.  I was only familiar with the basic 7 Seconds albums and EPs, and one of the demos, then I got a few of these others that I've posted here and each one has been totally awesome, I can't believe I hadn't bothered looking these up before.  Then again, I like 7 Seconds a lot, but I'm no completist.  It's possible these appear on some reissue or other release, I have no idea.  A quick search through Discogs makes me think they are not available widely.  Well, for those like me that hadn't heard this before, here ya go.  Early days 7 Seconds!    - DH

SPECIAL FORCES - Beer Sniper

Another recording from Berkeley punks SPECIAL FORCES.  I'm not sure what this is from.  The tape had the demo, and just said "Beer Sniper tracks" with the tracklisting, but I can't find any mention of a release or comp called Beer Sniper.  Nor do I see these songs listed on their releases on discogs. Is my google broken?  Am I dingus?  The recording is pretty awesome, so I'm surprised this isn't out there more.  This band really should have a discography CD.    - DH

CHRISTIAN MISTRESS - March 20th, 2011 @ Sugar Mountain, Oakland, CA [AUDIENCE]

For a while there, CHRISTIAN MISTRESS were frequently coming down to the bay area or passing through on tour, and the shows were just killing it, and getting better every time.  They released a great 10" that led them to sign to Relapse Records, and it seemed like they were poised to become a serious force.  Great tunes and great shows.  I'm not sure if they are a band anymore, I hadn't seen a show from them in a while or anything about new albums, and that was before the pandemic.  Whatever they are or aren't up to, they are still the shit to me. I  still think they are great.  I loved that 10" and wasn't about to pass up their first show in Oakland at Sugar Mountain, part of a US tour they did with the fucking Thrones!  What an unlikely and great combo!  Slough Feg played this show as well, it was amazing.  Sadly I swear I recorded the other bands but cannot find any of the other's files, hopefully they turn up on a hard drive.  - DH

SCREW 32 - October 15th, 1994 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Yet another band that I'm not familiar with, SCREW 32 live at 924 Gilman St in 1994.  If I had come across these guys earlier in life I would have dug them a whole lot, especially if I had grown up out here in the bay area and had seen them play a bunch.  As an adult, it's not generally in my wheelhouse but I can still appreciate and enjoy them, especially live because they certainly seem to be a fun live band.  If you liked them, you'll like this as well, as it's a pretty decent soundboard tape.    - DH

THE END (Rochester, NY) - Unreleased 1998 Demo

Today's post is from a punk band I was really into from my hometown of Rochester, NY, called THE END.  I know, there are a few bands with the name, so this is the punk band from NY to be clear.  I have a California band with the same name posting in the future, they are not the same band!  

So as I wrote, I was really into this band.  They were new-ish when I was starting my first band, I'd seen them a few times and then my band played our first show together with them.  Their bass player wound up leaving not long after that show, I think he may have done a 180 and joined the military.  So they needed a bass player.  Somehow I, not a bass player at all with no bass gear, volunteered myself.  Their guitar player Pat brought a bass over, showed me the set, and I sat up all night on mushrooms practicing the entire time.  The next day, and without any sleep at all, I played my first show with them.  I played with them for the spring and summer, and eventually left to focus on my own band, and they carried on with someone else.  I think they had a few bass players over the years, but the core of the band always remained the same.  

So in my brief time with them, I did write a couple songs, and we went and did a 4 track recording with Chris Dalcin in their practice space.  We never did anything with it though, it was never released, and there may have only ever been 2 or 3 copies on tape at the time, just for us in the band.  I came across it and thought it would be fun to digitize and share, sorry I don't remember the song titles.    - DH

DESPAIR - 1993 Demo

Another random mysterious demo from the Dodge collection, this time from a band called DESPAIR from Japan.  It's pretty badass punk from 1993, but sounds like a lot of more modern punk bands that you'd find coming out of the PNW in the US in the last 20 years.  Just hard charging tunes that steamroll from start to finish.  I don't know if they have any records out or if there's other material, but it would be a shame if this was all there was.  Still, what a badass tape to have as your only release if that's the way it is, as it's just pretty spot on. If anyone knows more about these folks, please chime in!   - DH

STORMCROW - December 12th, 2009 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Fuck yeah, Stormy!  I love STORMCROW, they are local and I saw them too many times to count from about 2004 until the end.  This was a birthday show for a bunch of buddies that had birthdays in December, so it was an all local show and I have a vague memory of it being a good time.  A show like this would have had a whole lot of smokin going on outdoors, and I'm sure I was right up in that action.  So yeah, Stormcrow ruled.  This is a rare soundboard recording from the set, slightly rebalanced in Izotope. 10 MINUTE WARNING - November 1982 Demo

Today's post is the November 1982 demo from 10 MINUTE WARNING.  For those that don't know,. 10 Minute Warning were a Seattle punk band that started from the ashes of The Fartz.  They were active for a couple years but within that time had some drastic lineup changes, as well as dramatic changes in style. Members of this band would later wind up in Mother Love Bone, The Accused, and Guns N Roses, as well as several others I'm likely overlooking.  This is the early version of the group, and is quite ripping.  I love this recording, and listen to it often.  It speaks to me, haha, I would have loved to have seen these guys live.  The 1984 version of 10MW is much different, and I'm personally not into it, I like this early stuff.  All the recordings from this 1982 and 1983 versions of the band were recently released on a very limited LP, and I would have loved to buy it but I'm not a vinyl guy, but I would have grabbed it in just about any other format, even digital.  Since it's only on LP, it's a no go for me.  And because it's only on such a limited pressing of a single format, and is likely all gone now, I'll just post this anyway, though I do generally shy away from officially and widely released recordings.    

For real though, stop reading and listen to this demo, it's so badass!   - DH

REAGAN YOUTH - December 17th, 1983 @ CBGB's, New York City, NY [SOUNDBOARD]

This is a killer set from REAGAN YOUTH out of New York City at the legendary CBGB's.  It's a soundboard recording with a decent mix as well, hell yeah.  This sounds worse than the copy that was uploaded by Fullmetal Archivist on Youtube HERE, but this is more complete, with a couple more songs, including the Led Zeppelin medley.  There is some confusion over the date though, hopefully I can get it cleared up.  My tape's J card lists this show as happening on December 19th, 1982.  I have another tape with this set on it also listed on this date.  Fullmetal Archivist lists it as December 17th, 1982.  There are a couple copyright notices that list the songs that were officially released as recorded on December 17th, 1983.  Who's right?  No idea at the moment, but I'll default to the band and the label here for now until I find out otherwise.  Anyone could be wrong.  Bands forget or are inattentive to these details, labels screw up, and tapers and traders certainly have typos all the time.   Perhaps when I come across the other sources I have of this show I'll have the mystery sorted, and I look forward to seeing how it compares audio quality wise with this tape and the others that are online already.  Oh, a clue about the proper year is that they mention playing an upcoming New Years Eve anarchist festival with Crucifix.  If anyone knows about this show, and can verify the year, speak up please!  - DH

THE FAITH - October 30th, 1982 @ Woodlawn High School [AUDIENCE]

Here's a quick and short set from THE FAITH, a band from that original wave of DC hardcore bands, though they were slightly more leaning towards the melodic side.  It's not great sounding, but this band was so short lived at a time when hardcore was still fresh, I'm just stoked it got documented at all.  Transferred this on a nice deck in a high resolution, and probably did a little EQ'ing as well to get the most out of it. If you like the roots of the DC hardcore scene, here ya go.   - DH
