A DEATH BETWEEN SEASONS - 1998 Demo

Every now and again as I digitize all these tapes, I come across one and wonder if I should upload it or skip it.  There's all kinds of reasons, and this one is the most mild of them: Do I post recordings I played on?  Well, I'm going for it I guess. This is the very first demo of my first actual band A DEATH BETWEEN SEASONS.  We recorded this live to a 4 track in my basement and sold it at shows for $1.  Punk.  It's fast, medium and slow all blended together with 3 separate vocalists and soaked in feedback.  It's a mess.  But it brings back good memories for me, I had no idea what I was doing, no idea on how to start the songs on time, but it was a lot of fun.  If you like raw, noisy, messy hardcore punk with some sludge tendencies, give this a shot!    - DH

THE DOGS - January 15th, 1978 @ Whiskey A Go Go, Hollywood, CA [AUDIENCE]

"Ladies and gentlemen, The Dogs!"  The Dogs, or The Detroit Dogs were a rock band from Detroit that took a huge influence from The Stooges, they even cover the Stooge's classic "I Wanna Be Your Dog" in this set.  This set is blistering too.  I wasn't familiar with the band before hearing this, but I've listened to this many times now, plus I've listened to their recorded output online as well.  This is another set that gets added to the very long list of shows I wish I could see in person, thanks to whoever had the foresight to record this show, I imagine it wasn't a simple task back in the 70's.   So yeah, cheers to whoever has made and kept this recording alive. Hope the folks that like this stuff find their way to this post.  - DH

CRIMPSHRINE - June 14th, 1987 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Today's offering is the coffee and cigarette punk sounds of CRIMPSHRINE, live at 924 Gilman St in 1987.  This was part of the Turn It Around showcase, with a big chunk of the Gilman house bands at the time playing one big show.  These are the kinds of shows that birthed the Lookout scene as far as I understand.  So because it's a 1987 soundboard, the sound can be a bit dodgy.  I didn't mess with it at all, so this is as it is on the tape itself for better or worse.  I think it sounds ok.  I know this band was well known for playing out of broken, held together with duct tape type equipment, so that could play into the sound itself.  If you like Crimpshrine, hopefully you dig this as well.  - DH

MINUTEMEN - November 27th, 1982 @ Studio Z, KPFK, Los Angeles, CA [FM]

Here's a recording I love and listen to regularly, an FM recording of MINUTEMEN at Studio Z, KPFK.  The sound on this is pretty much perfect.  The downside is that there are cuts between all the songs, and I doubt this recording even includes every song they played.  I really hope I have another source tape, I think I may have at least one more, or maybe I have another source already on a hard drive somewhere.  I'd love to hear it complete, but I'm also happy listening to this as it is.  What a band, too, so great and such a shame that it they were cut way too short by death of D Boon.  - DH

SMOLDERING REMAINS - "I Stepped Off The Curb And Got Hit By A Bus" 1988 Demo

SMOLDERING REMAINS!  This sounds like Ohio to me, based off experiences I've had in that state and demos I used to get from there in the 90's.  There's something in the water there, and it's probably on fire too.  So here's the demo this band did in 1988.  If you like immature knucklehead music like I do, and if you like Ohio like I don't, you'll love this tape.  Check it out.  - DH

ATHIESTS - Demo

This blog is full of bands I'd never heard of before digitizing the demo, and this is another one of those bands.  I'd never heard of ATHIESTS so I know absolutely nothing about them.  It's punk.  It's wacky.  I was told that it's possibly a 7 Seconds side project.  I dunno.  If you know, sound off in the comments!  And if I get confirmation or any info about them, I'll add it to this post.   - DH

INFEST - February 10th, 1989 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [AUDIENCE]

INFEST live at 924 Gilman St in 1989, hell yeah.  It's not as wild of a show as their SoCal shows generally sound, the crowd at Gilman was likely a lot smaller, and the room is fairly big.  Infest still brings it though.  This was likely recorded by Chris Dodge on his walkman.  A soundboard also exists and was partially released on Chris's label Slap-A-Ham.  This is also likely one of the very few times they played outside their home turf of Southern California until they reunited a couple decades later, so it's a rare one.  Enjoy!  If anyone knows the setlist or has the flyer scanned, get at me!  - DH

NO LABELS - April 25th, 1983 @ Benny's, Richmond, VA [AUDIENCE]

Here's a rare treat, a live set from NO LABELS live in Richmond, VA in 1983!  I don't see these very often, though I did just lose an eBay bid on a tape lot that had a No Labels / COC show from 1983 in North Carolina.  Fingers crossed that the recording crosses my desk sometime in the future, I doubt it's the only copy but when it's 40 years later, these things get real scarce sometime.  Especially when it's live tapes of obscure and short lived bands.  So with that, enjoy this.  If you are familiar with the band then have at it.  If yer not familiar, it's basically a buddy band with C.O.C. in their earliest days, they may have even shared a member I think.  It's fairly similar.  Fast hardcore.  It's great, even if they are sometimes a little out of tune here. If anyone finds the flyer or knows the setlist, hook it up!  - DH

PRIVATE OUTRAGE - "Life And Production" Rehearsal Demo

Yet another demo tape of a band I've never heard of.  All I know is what they say on the tape recording, this is a rehearsal demo recorded live into a tape player to send to Mystic Records.  This was recorded in San Francisco.  The tape has zero information.  No song titles, no members, no contact info, etc.  Just the image on the cover and text on the spine.  Well, it's punk from the 80's based on the sound.  It's a noisy rehearsal tape.  It kinda rules, I dig it.   Obviously things didn't work out with Mystic, and the band never released a record or any other tapes, so this may be the only evidence of their existence.  Enjoy!  - DH

THE DRAB!  I don't know anything about these guys other than that they were from San Jose / Los Gatos area.  This tape seems like it's the same demo as what's listed as their 1985 Demo, except the songs are in a different order, and it's missing one.  Not sure what the deal with that is, but this is the way the tape came.  I'm guessing it's the same exact recording as the 85 demo.  Well, it's punk.  You like punk?  Check 'em out then!  And if you know more info about this band or tape, clue me in!  - DH

Australian grinders AGENTS OF ABHORRENCE came to the US in 2007 and did a west coast tour with Iron Lung if I remember correctly.  I rarely thought to give the soundperson a tape to see about getting a board recording (back when they had a tape deck), but I'm glad this night I had the foresight to have it done.  It's raw and overdriven and fast as hell.  It rules.  - DH

RIBZY - Demo

RIBZY is a band I know very, very little about.  I know they were a band local to the bay area in the late 80's.  I know they had a few demos and a 7", and eventually had a CD with all the demo recordings in one disc.  I believe this demo is probably on it but as of now I can't find it online to listen to so I can't verify it.  And there are no song titles that came with this dub, just "Ribzy Demo" and that's it.  So either way, it would be neat to have the whole demo online as it's own thing for folks like me looking to check out the band and where they began.  Plus, the CD isn't super widely available or anything like that, it may even be out of print already.  Regardless, just listen to RIBZY and hopefully it's something you dig.

EDIT:

Ok, my friends were quick to chime on on the band and this recording.  RIBZY were a San Jose band that were active throughout the 80's, but only released some demos and a 7", and some various comps.  The demo and comp songs were released on a CD a while back.  This specific "demo" is their contribution to the "Growing Pains" tape comp, a tape comp featuring all San Jo bands that was released in 1983.  This is culled from a few different sessions and all of it is on the "81-85 Recordings" CD.  Thanks to Jake Kelly for giving me the details!   - DH

HIGH ON FIRE - December 5th, 2005 @ Scala, London, UK [SOUNDBOARD]

"London fucking England, we are High On fucking Fire!"  I love that intro, I crack a smile whenever I hear it. HIGH ON FIRE were on tour with Mastodon in the UK towards the end of 2005, at the end of a year of touring in support of their latest record at the time, "Blessed Black Wings".  This was the era of the band with the mighty Joe Preston on bass, before Jeff Matz was in the band, and I thought that was so wicked that Joe was in the band.  He just has so much tone, it doesn't really show up in this recording as much as it did live. Joe was pretty much the opposite of Matt and Dez at the time, so I wasn't surprised when Joe left the band.  But man, that record he did with them rules, still a top HoF record for me.

In 2005 my wife and I took a vacation out to the UK, and decided to follow the High On Fire / Mastodon tour, with us taking trains between cities and doing some sight seeing in the day, and then the shows at night.  We brought some cameras and audio gear, just what we could carry in our backpacks, and caught a fair chunk of the tour in some form.  In London we set up the microtrack I had to the board, and caught the board mix.  The problem with HoF board recordings is that Matt is so loud on stage, he's not run through the PA as much as vocals or drums are.  Using Izotope I was able to boost the guitars up in the mix, and it sounds a lot better now.  However in the first few songs, Matt's vocal mic would short out occasionally.  It gets resolved, but just so you know why the vocals would drop out in a few spots.  Anyhoo, enjoy the High On Fire!   - DH

Here is the "Living Room" Tape from THE FEEDERZ, recorded sometime around 1979 / 1980.  This is a recording that's no stranger to Youtube, I see a couple other uploads, however this one might be a superior copy, or at least comparable to the better one, and it's certainly not the worst.  Plus, this one has that handy download link below for anyone looking to have a copy permanently to listen to offline.  I'm not overly familiar with the band, but as I have some live tapes from them, I feel I'll be getting far more familiar with them over time.  Until I get more Feederz posted, enjoy this bit of punk rock history! - DH

OPERATION IVY - June 14th, 1987 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Well, on one hand this is a decent sounding live soundboard recording of OPERATION IVY, who were brand new at the time, playing the now legendary Turn It Around show.  On the other, it's plagued with technical difficulties, broken strings, broken straps, out of tune guitars and anything else that could happen.  So it's a bittersweet post.  I feel like this could describe a lot of Op Ivy shows, at the least the ones I've seen in heard via audio and video recordings.  I am guessing here, as I never saw the band live, but I imagine they were a lot more fun to see and dance along to with your buddies, and were probably focused on that experience, and were less concerned with a technically perfect set that may wind up on tape and then critiqued by some goober ass stay at home dad on his tape blog several decades later.  Lol.  It's Op Ivy.  Don't think too hard about it, have fun, and maybe be stoned.  - DH

DIDDLY SQUAT - "No Questions" - 1987 Demo

From the Pacific Northwest comes this next band, DIDDLY SQUAT, and their 1987 demo "No Questions".  This is a rip right from the tape the band was selling, and it's one of the few recordings the band ever released.  Before this, they had a demo entitled "Peroxide In The Scablands" and then followed this release up with the self titled 7".  The Diddly Squat story came to a tragic end with the accidental death of  guitarist Jason Cobb on the same day as what was supposed to be their last show.  Surviving members when on to bands Christ On A Crutch, Aspirin Feast, Tree People, Laceration, Citizen's Utilities, Brotherhood, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Foo Fighters, as well as others.  Vocalist Mike Fischer passed away in 2014. They live on in these recordings, so appreciate the fact that they exist! - DH

CAPITALIST CASUALTIES - December 6th, 1991 @ U-Gene's, Pico Rivera, CA [AUDIENCE]

Here is a real gem!  A master tape audience recording of CAPITALIST CASUALTIES recorded by Chris Dodge himself on a little walkman (probably).  From what I understand, this may have been the first CC show to happen in SoCal, and is also notable for being the first Man Is The Bastard show as well.  This sounds like a rowdy show, and apparently it was the night that inspired the MITB song "HSMP" after a fight broke out during the show and a short Hispanic man calmed everyone down, and the show continued.  Sadly, that incident is not caught on the tape.  And it's also unfortunate that this is an incomplete recording, but there is at least nearly a half hour of it caught on tape, far better than nothing!  Anyhoo, enjoy this piece of powerviolence history!   - DH

SOCIAL UNREST - December 30th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

The final set from the 924 Gilman St 20th Anniversary weekend comes via a reunited SOCIAL UNREST.  I'm not exactly sure, but did they do a few reunions over the years?  I know I saw them, but I wasn't at this show.  Regardless, it's an old timey East Bay punk band from the very early 80's, they were here doing it locally well before most were, and getting to hear them live is a treat for me, and one I'm sure I didn't fully appreciate at the time I saw them.  I'm glad I can listen to this now and be stoked on it, hopefully anyone reading this will be stoked as well.  - DH

EL DOPA is the next band in the series of posts from the 924 Gilman St 20th Anniversary weekend.  What a killer band they were.  I don't know much about them personally, but I did see them during this reunion period, though not this specific show.  They were right up my alley for what I liked in the late 90's, so had I lived out west when they were active I probably would have been at all their shows.  Glad I managed to catch them, and then also glad to have some killer recordings of them, such as this one.  If you like drug fueled crusty violence, then you are in for a treat, check this out!  - DH

The 2nd band of the 2nd night of the 924 Gilman St 20th Anniversary shows was LOOK BACK AND LAUGH, another powerhouse of local hardcore that I imagine folks know about, as they put out records and toured and such.  So I won't waste time talking about them.  I will say though that if they sound a bit different at all, it's because this is a 4 piece version of the band.  Casey was not performing this night.  Not sure if it's because he was busy or if he was 86'd from Gilman at the time, but they charged on without him and it sounds good to me.  I like Casey, but this still gets the point across.  So enjoy the LBAL!  - DH

A.D.T. - December 30th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [MULTITRACK SOUNDBOARD]

Now we come to day 2 of the 924 Gilman St 20th Anniversary shows, and kicking things off was A.D.T. (ATTACK DISARM TAKEOVER).  Now, I saw these guys a handful of times, and as I often do, I kinda glossed over them and didn't give them much of my attention, only for some years to pass and to hear them again and think "WTF, why wasn't I seeing them every chance I got?"  ADT is some solid old guy hardcore punk, which of course I dig.  I'll likely have to edit this once I get corrected, but as far as my foggy brain remembers, this band featured some members of Attitude Adjustment, and eventually morphed into the Attitude Adjustment reunion that would come the following year I believe.  I remember being stoked, because as you may be hearing, it's not that far off from AA at all.  I mean, these guys were writing this in the 80's, and here they are still cranking out these sorts of tunes without fluff, just solid bashing and energetic hardcore.  So yeah, I'm stoked to have found this recording, and to make up for my lack of attention back then with some now.

A word about this recording, this was from a DVDR with multittrack stems.  Maybe 10-13 tracks depending on the band.  Granted, these are Gilman mics, so they get knocked around, but still, this is cool and better than the average board recording.  I am not an engineer, so I knocked out a quick mix, real quick.  I didn't EQ anything though, I was just shooting to get something slightly better than the average Gilman board tape so I was more focused on general levels.  I'll provide each band with a link to the tracks, maybe someday one will do something with them.  - DH

BABY JAIL - December 29th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

BABY JAIL!  I don't know who these people are, but it is a short burst of extremely aggressive obnoxiousness.  I don't like it, but then again, I do find obnoxiousness kind of fun and certainly punk, so this is not without it's own weird charm, as rough as that is.  So yeah, if that sounds like something you'd dig, this post is here for you.  Enjoy.    - DH

BORN/DEAD - December 29th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

More from the 924 Gilman St 20th Anniversary show, this time from the mighty BORN/DEAD.  This is another great sounding recording, probably not a standard soundboard.  I think this was multi-tracked and mixed, though this CDR was just the mixed version.  For some off reason all of the songs were out of order though.  I have no idea what the correct order would have been, so it is what it is.  Not that it takes away from the recording at all, it still sounds like a steamroller. If you like some good ol' hardcore punk, then this post is for you.  - DH

DRAIN THE SKY - December 29th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

You may have never heard of this band here, but personally I am extremely excited to have a DRAIN THE SKY show in this quality.  I have a couple other sets from them, but nothing touches this one.  I'll still post them eventually though, because this band is killer.  So who are they?  This is a band from Oakland featuring Carl Auge, formerly of His Hero Is Gone.  He was living out here for a few years and had a few great bands, I Love A Parade, Drain The Sky, and he released the Dimlaia record while out here as well I believe.  If you like the gloomier side of HHIG, and missed it when the rest of the band went for a more for a hardcore vibe in Tragedy, then you can fill up on that mood with this recording.  Drain The Sky had an EP on Life Is Abuse, and I know the Dimlaia was released on vinyl, track them down, it's worth it.  As far as I Love A Parade, if anyone has something, please share, I have no audio or video at all.

So anyhoo, I'm stoned and rambling, but here is another set from the 20th anniversary of 924 Gilman St.  I believe this was multitracked and mixed, but I only had a CDR of a mixed version.  The songs were out of order, so I did try to puzzle it back together, hopefully I got it right but I'm sure there's a mistake or two.  Not that it really matters or affects anything, it's still a rad listen.  OK, nobody should be reading any of this, ya'll should just be checking out the band, so I'm gonna stop typing now and get some coffee.  Later.   - DH

THIS IS MY FIST - December 29th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

So this might be a bit of a misleading title here, as this is not THIS IS MY FIST.  It sort of is, but Annie was sick, so this is them doing a medley of acoustic Misfits songs for 10 minutes.  Ever want to hear most of This Is My Fist doing an acoustic medley of Misfits songs?  Well, here ya go  - DH

THE JOCKS - December 29th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Another band from the 924 Gilman St 20th Anniversary shows, and another band I know absolutely nothing about.  This is THE JOCKS.  I'd never heard them, before, never heard of them before, but dang, I like this.  I've listened to it a few times now.  So If you've never heard them, and like punk, then try this out, maybe you'll dig it too.   - DH

DOUBLE D'S - December 29th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

DOUBLE D'S!   I don't know a damn thing about this band.  But they were the first band on the stage at this show, the 20th anniversary for 924 Gilman St in Berkeley!  And now it's over 15 years later, and time to get these sets up, starting with Double D's.  I may not know a thing about the band, but I do know this is a really fun set to listen to.  I believe this was mixed from a multitrack recording made off the board, but I got it as just a mixed CDR.  Though a few of the bands mixes seemed funky so maybe it's just a straight board recording, I'm not sure.  Regardless, it's good.  If you like obnoxious and infectious punk rock tunes, this might be something you'd dig.  - DH

CIRCLE JERKS - September 11th, 1982 @ On Broadway, San Francisco, CA [AUDIENCE]

This might be one of the lousiest CIRCLE JERKS live recordings I've come across.  Yet, I've listened to it several times now despite it being a fairly rough audience recording.  I figure though that if I posted this up, the CJ posts will only get better as this is the bottom of the barrel here.  I'm also curious about trying to solve a small mystery here.  You see the tape is labeled  10/09/82 SF, but there was no show in SF on October 9th 1982.  If you ready the date in the Euro / UK format, them there is a CJ show in SF, but on the 11th of September, not the 10th.  They played Sacramento on September 10th.  So which show is this?  Sac on the 10th of September?  SF on the 11th?  Or is the whole damn label just entirely wrong?  Anyone that could shed some light on this, I'd appreciate knowing for certain.  For now, I'll just assume it's the SF show on the 11th, and will edit it if I get more accurate info.  - DH

SEDITION - 1991 "Rehearsal Tape" Demo

This is something I'd never even heard of before, SEDITION was apparently the band Jon and Rob were in prior to forming Discordance Axis!  This is a rehearsal demo recorded in 1991.  It's more straighforward grind like the earlier DA material and sounds pretty sick.  If that sounds like something you'd dig, then you are in for a treat here, enjoy! - DH
