BAD BRAINS - November 20th, 1986 @ The Metro, Phoenix, AZ [Audience]

I had spent all morning on a different upload I had been planning, digitizing the tape, splitting it intro tracks and making sure they were all named, etc. and after uploading it I found that it was blocked worldwide.  I suppose I could have just posted it without the Youtube video, and maybe sometime I'll do that, but for now I just decided to put up something else.  So today ya get an incomplete BRAD BRAINS clip from Phoenix, AZ in 1986, on tour in support of the recently released "I Against I" album.  This is three songs or so, and one tune is a reggae song, so it's overall a good one to smoke out to.  Hopefully I can find out if the rest was recorded, or if this is all.  And if there's more, I hope I can hear it, and even better be able to share it here.  For now, just kick back to this.   DH

LAUDANUM - November 29th, 2009 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

I would go see LAUDANUM every damn time I could, which wasn't really that often considering how rarely they ever played out, especially in their earlier years.  They seemed like a band with no "career" ambition, they were just content to exist and to be as heavy as possible while doing it.  It was refreshing, and gave a genuine vibe to their tunes and shows.  I saw them with Robert Collins on bass first, then later on when Greg Wilkinson took over, but they really hit a new level with this lineup.  Sal from Asunder / Insidious was on bass, and they got a dedicated vocalist, Nathan from Graves At Sea!  It was a perfect combination that hit a new low in terms of heaviness and mood.  This lineup put out a great record, and suddenly they seemed to be playing out more frequently.  Sadly, they never got the recognition I thought they were due, they never played a Roadburn or got flown out to do an MDF as far as I knew.  Did they even tour?  I can't remember.  Probably not though.  Perhaps that's why they didn't get the love I think the deserved, perhaps people will come around to them when they look at this time period in the future.  Thankfully I recorded them a couple times before they stopped being a band, and here is one of those recordings.  This was from the soundboard at 924 Gilman St, back when they briefly had a CD burner that they could record shows with.  I did a little messing around with it in Izotope, bringing those vocals down a bunch and boosting the heck out of everything else, especially guitar.  So now it sounds much better than the original disc.  Hopefully people who like these slow heavy bands find this and enjoy it! - DH

BLOODBATH - 1986 [DEMO]

The bay area produced a lot of well known thrash bands in the 80's, but there apparently were many that were around and never really broke out.  It's one of the things I love about these kinds of tapes.  The bands sometimes get overshadowed when in the thick of the peak of the scene, but if the recordings survive the decades, then it's there to be appreciated finally.  BLOODBATH is one of those bands.  I don't know anything about them, but this demo is a ripper.  Did they just get lost in the shuffle of all the thrash greatness in the 80's?  I have no idea, but I'm glad this tape exists to enjoy now.  Maybe it's not an original spin on the sound, but it's quality still.  Sadly, the tape I have has no song titles.  It did come with a few other things filling out the tape, such as a live set from Ruthie's Inn, the Hirax 1984 demo, and another band on the flip side.  I've enjoyed playing this thing, and now you can enjoy it as well! - DH

ANIMALS AS LEADERS - July 18th, 2011 @ Mohawk Place, Buffalo, NY [AUDIENCE AUDIO]

This one is a bit out of my wheelhouse but that's ok.  It's good to shake things up.  So in 2011 I was asked by my friends in Intronaut to come out and help out on merch for this upcoming tour they were doing as direct support for ANIMALS AS LEADERS.  I'd been mildly familiar with them in that I'd heard a song or two but had never heard their album.  But who cares, it's Intronaut and they are the homies so of course I'd go.  Animals As Leaders won me over though I'm not one to get into bands they might otherwise be associated with.  Still, I play guitar and had to be amazed at their level of musicianship and their ability to write memorable songs, the two don't always go hand in hand.  They were nice guys too, and smoked a LOT of pot, and if you know me you know that gets me right in the heart.  So I had a little Zoom recorder with me for shits and giggles, and every so often I'd remember to set it up somewhere out of the way and hit record.  This is one of those times.

Animals As Leaders were out on their first headlining tour, and it was a blast, but damn was it hot!  There was a heatwave following the tour around the entire midwest and east coast.  It was moving as fast as we were.  A lot of these shows were sold out and packed, and I found out many of these venues have very little air circulation.  So it was a sweaty, dripping, moist bunch of folks for an entire month. My memory of Buffalo was that it was so fucking HOT, like every other damn day was.  Sweat coming off the ceilings, all that kind of shit.  How any of these bands could get up on a stage and under the lights, where it was likely 5 to 10 degrees hotter, and then play this stuff!  Fuck me, I'd give up.  I'd start a drone band.  And that's why you are hearing a set from these guys and not from me.  So yeah, hats off to these guys for doing it, and doing it high.  It was fun to be out with everyone sweating half our body weight away.  - DH

FILTH - May 25th, 1991 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Here we have a very incomplete soundboard clip from FILTH, live at 924 Gilman St in 1991.  This was with Econochrist, and was tacked on at the end of their set on the tape.  Unfortunately the tape ends with only 2 complete songs, and a partial of a third.  This is from a dub, so the master or more copies must exist out there, who's got it?  Hook it up!  - DH

FUCK-UPS - January 22nd, 1983 @ T-Bird Rollerdome, Pico Rivera, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

This post brings you a soundboard recording from San Francisco punks, the FUCK-UPS live in Pico Rivera, 1983.  The Fuck-Ups didn't release much, but the record they did release, FU82, is fantastic and has one of the best album covers ever.  It is absolutely punk.  This set is a bit rough sounding, it's heavy on the bass, a little low on guitars, etc. but things to balance out as it goes along.  It's sadly a little incomplete as the final song "White Boy" gets cut off.  Boooo.  Enjoy the rest though!  - DH

TERMINAL CHOICE - "Communication Or Annihilation" [DEMO]

I have no idea who this is. According to the info on the demo cover scanned into Discogs, this is a band from Irvine, CA that started in 1985.  This is the only recorded music they've released, just a 4 song demo tape they self released and likely just sold to friends.  This is a dub, so not from the actual tape they were distributing.  Still sounds good though.  If you like mid 80's west coast punk, here's a rarity for you, enjoy!   - DH

NOFX - November 7th, 1987 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Another NOFX post, this time it's the earliest ones I think I've come across, so far at least.  This is a soundboard recording from their set opening for RKL.  And before you start asking, the RKL set came out sounding like total garbage, it's not worth posting.  Soundboard recordings from Gilman have always been hit or miss, but in 1987 they were largely misses due to the limitations of the gear they were mixing sound on.  Sometimes like the RKL set it's just too much and it's unlistenable.  Sometimes it's like this NOFX set where it's ok enough to post, perhaps some diehards would really want to hear this.  I did run it though Izotope and turned down the vocals, while boosting everything else, especially the guitars.  You really got nothing but vocals on the actual tape, this Izotope program really helped make it a bit more listenable.  And I'm guessing that determination is also going to hinge on whether you find NOFX's music listenable to begin with.  Lol, pow! Ha.  Ok, I'm an idiot.  If you like this, please go nuts with it I guess, do a stagedive off your couch.  - DH

HELLSHOCK - December 27th, 2002 @ Burnt Ramen, Richmond, CA [AUDIENCE]

Dang, this recording is almost 20 years old now.  Blows my mind.  This was a killer set from Portland's HELLSHOCK, maybe their first time down in the east bay?  Or did they play another time before this?  I remember a couple Hellshock shows at BR.  Regardless, this is an early show in the band's lifespan, and I believe they still just had a demo as far as music that could be had at the time.  Burnt Ramen shows were also a bit of a blur, thankfully John The Baker was always there to record the sets while he was working the soundbooth.  These were just recorded with a couple mics up near the ceiling, but the caught a lot of wild nights.  I wish I had been diligent about getting copies of the shows that happened there.  Sad.  Anyhoo, I did get this one.  It rules, and has been listened to many times over the years.  Now you get to hear it too.  Hopefully you dig it, Hellshock is a great band!   - DH

ANHEDONIST - May 14th, 2011 @ Victory Warehouse, Oakland, CA [AUDIENCE]

It's a beautiful day currently so it's a perfect day for a doom cloud to roll through, via this live set from ANHEDONIST, a Seattle doom metal band. They disbanded in 2014, and sadly guitar player Kim passed away from cancer a few years later.  This was their first time in Oakland, they came a few times after but because of my own battles with cancer, I was only ever able to catch them at this show. This was a great show if I remember correctly.  This was at the Victory Warehouse, so it's DIY, nothing is going through the PA except vocals, so what you get here is just the band playing in a room.  I was up front with my Zoom HQ recorder and the video quality is pretty terrible on those, but the audio was far better, so I saved a WAV file of it.  And here it is.  Get gloomy to it.   - DH

FUNERAL DINER - March 26th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Today's post is a soundboard recording of FUNERAL DINER at 924 Gilman St, the show they did with Gospel, which is also uploaded HERE.  Now, I've seen these folks a handful of times, even played shows with them a couple times, but at the time it just didn't connect so I never fell in love with them, despite liking the style they play.  But I know people do love them, so this is for them.  Listening to this now though, I sure wish I'd paid more attention, or at the very least recorded them at the shows I did see of theirs.  Oh well.  At least this exists, and hopefully I'll find more.  Thanks to Jonathan for recording this and loaning me the tape to digitize.  I ran it through Izotope, and turned down the vocals and drums a bit, and turned up the bass and guitar.  Sounds a bit better this way.  So yeah, enjoy.  If anyone has a flyer or knows the setlist, please send them my way!   - DH

HALF OFF "Same Old Story" 1986 [DEMO]

Got a demo from HALF OFF here.  Classic 80's hardcore from southern California.  Raw and earnest and all that good stuff. Just the kind of thing I like being stoned to.  But this is a 30 year old tape and has some flaws, in the form of an occasional pop in the audio.  It's rare, but it still annoys me.  Perhaps I'll do a new transfer someday but for now I'll just have to cope.  It still rules, just giving anyone listening a heads up so they don't think it's from their device, computer, or stereo.  Cheers, enjoy - DH

This is a pretty decent sounding soundboard recording of CHRIST ON PARADE at 924 Gilman St in 1988, opening for Social Unrest.  Though give it a minute or two for the levels to balance out, after that it sounds pretty killer as far as Gilman board recordings from the '80's go.  Sadly it's missing the last song or two.  If anyone has the setlist or a flyer or pics from this night let me know!  And be on the lookout for an audience recording of this set to be posted eventually!    - DH

MACABRE - April 2nd, 1988 - Normal, IL @ The Gallery [SOUNDBOARD]

MACABRE!  I have no info on what city or venue this show took place in, if anyone knows, please let me know! All I know is that this is a soundboard from a show in Illinois.  It's pretty decent sounding though, with some songs from their self titled release, their demo, and some songs that would wind up on their LP released the next year.  They even do an M.O.D. cover!  Not very nice there though guys, haha.  If you like Macabre, hopefully you dig this as well.  - DH

UPDATE: (3/04/22):

Youtube user gavin. commented with a link to another version of this show, this time a video.  It's the same exact set, but listed as taking place in Chicago, though no date.  So we have the date from the tape, as well as the state, and thanks to the video we know it takes place in Chicago.  All we need is the venue name!  Sweet!  Thanks for bringing this to my attention gavin. and thanks to Reaper Metal Productions for uploading the video version.  -  DH

GRAYCEON - January 19th, 2007 @ Annie's Social Club, San Francisco, CA [AUDIENCE]

Today's upload is from the ever incredible GRAYCEON, and an early show from them just prior to their 1st album being released.  If I remember correctly, this was with Drain The Sky and Middian (Mike from YOB's band when YOB was on hiatus for a bit).  They were replacing Asunder who dropped off the bill.  I love Asunder, but I saw them a lot, and was pretty excited to see Grayceon, who I may have only seen once prior to this, but also saw many times after this.  Grayceon features members of several local bay area bands, I can't remember them all.  Walken I think?  I know Jackie was in Amber Asylum and appeared on loads of other band's records, and she was in Giant Squid as well, another favorite who will be posted on here eventually.  Anyhoo, enjoy the Grayceon.  And look them up too, they recently became active again and even released a new album, so check them out.  Look, I'll make things easier, here's a link to the GRAYCEON BANDCAMP   - DH

ROTTREVORE - September 21st, 1991 - Buffalo, NY [SOUNDBOARD]

He's a badass soundboard recording of ROTTREVORE live in Buffalo, NY.  It's not complete, the recording doesn't start until the end of the 2dnd song played this night, Crude Domination.  This was everything that was recorded however.  It's pretty much a live version of their demo tape, which by the way can be found elsewhere on this blog, just follow the Rottrevore tag at the bottom of this post.  It's a killer recording for a soundboard, and I didn't touch anything on it, just digitized and uploaded it as is, outside of the quick fade ins / fadeout at either end of the recording. This came from someone in the band as it was added to the b-side of the 1990 demo, so it's likely off the master, or otherwise a very low gen tape at least.  Anyhoo, enjoy!    - DH

CRUCIFIX - March 9th, 1984 @ Vale Social Club, Nottingham, UK [SOUNDBOARD]

I don't know what I was thinking posting this, haha.  It's a very muffled sounding soundboard.  I think I tried to help it via Izotope but gave up.  I mean, I've listened to far worse sounding things I suppose, so whatever.  It's classic Crucifix in the UK in 1984.  So it's absolutely worth posting even if it's muddy sounding.  Check it out if you like the band, though for those who are less familiar with the band I'd probably suggest just checking out their album "Dehumanization" or their EPs.   - DH

EDIT : listening to this again, and it's obvious this tape runs really fast.  I'll try slowing down the recording and reuploading it, but that's gonna take some time.  I'd suggest holding off on downloading this for now.  Sorry 'bout that.

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT - April 15th, 1988 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

This is a fairly decent sounding soundboard recording (by Gilman's standards) of a reunited ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT in 1988.  It's got some issues, a broken guitar string that had to be replaced, the occasional false start, but otherwise a pretty damned ripping set!  I did a little tweaking in Izotope, to turn up the guitar and bass, and turn down the vocals.  It helps a little bit.  Gilman soundboards can be pretty hit and miss, maybe more leaning towards the misses, but it's punk, so I won't nitpick tooooo hard, unless the levels are all over the place and fluctuating for the entirety of the set!  This one starts off rough, but gets better.  Dig it.   - DH

This is a pretty good soundboard recording of DEAD KENNEDYs, live in WV in 1985, but it is sadly just far too short.  Still worth posting but I really hope the rest of the recording is floating around out there and that I find a copy.  They are playing with DRI, hopefully that recording exists as well.  Does anybody have some leads on that?  Until there's more, at least we can enjoy these couple songs.  Heads up though, Bleed For Me is just the very end, such a tease.    - DH

RAMONES - March 5th, 1977 @ The Rocker Tavern, Aberdeen, WA [AUDIENCE]

THE RAMONES!  This is am audience recording, sourced from a cassette dub of the bootleg double LP, "At Your Birthday Party", released in 1979.  Not a mindblowing recording, but it's not too shabby considering it's lineage here.  Though if anyone has an upgrade, I'll gladly take it!  Nothing too wild about this set, it's just Ramones being solid in a bar in a very small, and out of the way town, a town by the way notable for being the birthplace of the bands The Melvins and Nirvana.  "You're Ginna Kill That Girl" cuts out at the end, just a heads up.  So yeah, Ramones.  Enjoy!  - DH

CALIFORNIA LOVE - February 3rd, 2006 @ Annie's Social Club, San Francisco, CA [AUDIENCE]

Here is the 2nd ever live performance from CALIFORNIA LOVE, a bay area hardcore / powerviolence band. They opened for Annihilation Time, so it's basically them playing to a bunch of their friends from that crew.  Lots of heckling by their buds, and the vocalist heckling them back.  Fun times.  I don't remember what I recorded on, but dang it came out sounding not too shabby.  I used to know titles to these songs, but that was a while ago.  Pretty sure it's all songs from the first LP, so if anyone wants to sit down and sort that out, I'd edit the info in and thank ya.  Regardless, download, play loud, get ripped, all that fun stuff.    - DH

NO COMMENT - May 25th, 1991 @ Spanky's, Riverside, CA [AUDIENCE]

These guys don't need any introduction, right?  Not for people that have any interest in powerviolence or faster hardcore at least.  They never toured, so there are only so many live recordings made from the limited amount of shows they did in California, I'm glad people had the foresight to record them at all.  So while this ain't the best sounding tape, it exists and for that reason I'm happy with it.  Enjoy! - DH

STIKKY - September 20th, 1987 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

This is awesome.  Today I'm sharing a STIKKY soundboard from a show opening for Soulside at 924 Gilman St in 1987.  They do a lot of covers in this set!  The sound gets kinda wonky on the tape and I ran it through Izotope to try and help it along.  In the tape there was hardly any guitar or drums in the mix, so I boosted both.  And turned down the vocals somewhat.  That said, the mix still fluctuates a bit throughout the tape, especially in their 7 Seconds cover.  Nothing I can do about that.  Thankfully it's not as often and annoying as the Soulside soundboard recording from this show, which you can find on this blog.  Enjoy the STIKKY, if anyone can help with some of the titles I'd appreciate.  I have a chunk that I'll edit in later.  - DH

BENUMB - December 27th, 2002 @ Burnt Ramen, Richmond, CA [AUDIENCE]

I've had this CD for coming up on 20 years later this year, just after this show happened.  And I'm happy to share it out to a (hopefully) wider audience.  BENUMB rules.  They were badass live, and they, and especially Pete, were some of the nicest people I've ever met in the scene.  This whole post could be a love letter to Pete.  Pete's not your typical guy in the scene, but god damn I'm forever grateful he's around.  I won't get into personal stuff, just suffice to say I love Pete and he had a huge impact on my life.

This show was a benefit I believe for the People Under No King zine, an enormous and awesome zine largely filled with the great photos Susan took around the area at the time.  I hope I still have mine in a bin in storage somewhere.  So this show had a bunch of local punx that were happenin' around this time, Desolation, Scurvy Dogs, and Born/Dead.  Plus fellow punx from Portland, Hellshock, came down for what was probably their first performance down here.  And then capping the night off was a lesson in killer grind via the mighty Benumb.  This was towards the end of Benumb's time as a band sadly.  Not sure if I ever saw them again after this night.  Thankfully this was a period in Burnt Ramen's history when John The Baker was always at the board, and he had a couple of mics hooked up to record audio of all the Burnt Ramen sets happening in those years.  I don't remember who I got this CDR from, but I got it pretty much right after the show.  Now you can download it and enjoy as well.

GOSPEL - March 6th, 2006 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Here's a soundboard recording of NY's, GOSPEL live at 924 Gilman St.  Not sure how I'd describe them, kind of emo / screamo, kind of proggy, I dunno.  Just hardcore kids pushing more boundaries with the genre and I love it.  I was a huge fan of the record they put out around this time.  I actually missed this show for some reason but caught them a couple months later on their home turf in New York City.

So this is an ok recording, some of the levels get a little wild but eh, I still like listening to it.  I ran it through Izotope to crank down the vocals a bunch, but didn't touch it beyond that.  I don't like messing with soundboards that have fluctuating mixes like this.

So hopefully people who dig this band find this recording and enjoy it.  If anyone knows the setlist, please help out.  Or maybe someday I'll dig the CD out of storage and figure it out, though I think the final tune might not be on the record.  Anyhoo, Gospel.  Dig it.  - DH

AGNOSTIC FRONT - September 18th, 1982 @ Terminal 406, Baltimore, MD [AUDIENCE]

Definitely not one of the better recordings posted here, this AGNOSTIC FRONT set is still worth checking out for it's historical value in the world of New York hardcore.  This a very early AF performance, before Roger Miret was in the band on vocals.  They only played live a few times at this point.  Thanks to whoever recorded this though, I appreciate it, and hopefully so do a few people that come across this blog. - DH
