RIPCORD - March 14th, 1987 - Rehearsal

Rehearsal recordings are badass.  Cheers to all those that have made them or shared them, I like hearing them, and I've made them personally, mainly for my own bands that nobody wants to hear and a couple times for some friends bands.  That was before I started digitizing tapes and realized how many of these sorts of recordings existed, I may have tried to make more of my various friends' bands.  Ah well.  At least there are some quite cool ones out there, such as this tape from a RIPCORD rehearsal from 1987.  Likely recorded on a boombox, it sounds as noisy and raw as the general audience recordings floating around out there.   I don't know anything about the source of the tape, I don't know the setlist, I just know I like playing it from time to time.   - DH

RABID LASSIE - "Camel Toe" 1987 Demo

It's a rainy Monday here in Oakland so it means it's time for another demo.  Today's offering comes from an 80's bay area punk band called RABID LASSIE.  I'm not super familiar with them but I know they were active in the early Gilman St scene.  I also know they would later become the straightedge hardcore band Breakaway but I'm far less familiar with them.  Rabid Lassie seems like a fun band, and I really like this demo.  This was they only thing they released however, besides a song from this also being on the Turn It Around comp.  Though if you dig these guys, and really want more from them, the b-side of this tape says "old demo - specially taped for Chris", Chris being the one and only Chris Dodge who passed his tapes down to me.   So, if you want more Rabid Lassie, keep your eyes peeled for that post sometime in the future.  Also, this tape is longer than the other upload and what's listed on discogs by 4 songs, so it's already giving you more Rabid Lassie.  How cool is that?   - DH

PLAID RETINA - May 27th, 1988 @ The Place, Davis, CA [AUDIENCE]

This is a rarity for sure, a live set from PLAID RETINA.  Certainly a very under appreciated band from the Fresno, California. They do have an EP and LP on Lookout, as well as an LP on Very Small Records, but still, they are much more talked about bands on those labels sucking up a lot of the attention.  If you ain't familiar, do yourself a favor and look them up.  I have some demos I'll upload eventually, but I assume those are also uploaded by someone already.  This here is a recording made by someone out in the audience, so it's a bit noisy, but considering how uncommon it is to find live Plaid Retina audio, I'll take it.   I don't have a flyer, so I don't know who else played besides Stikky, who occupies side A of this tape, and which you can find posted a couple weeks earlier in the beginning of February.     - DH

24-7 SPYZ - June 16th, 1989 Chicago, IL [AUDIENCE]

I don't know much about 24-7 SPYZ admittedly, I'd never checked them out prior to coming across this tape in a lot I bought off ebay.  It wasn't high up on my list of tapes to transfer either, but for some reason I threw it in the deck and went for it.  I was surprised at how much I dug this.  I'm not one for funk metal or punk generally, but I do have a few soft spots for some of those bands, such as Faith No More, which this band reminds me a lot of.  Just pure energy throughout this set too, so it was real easy for me to be stoned and hooked for the whole thing while I cleaned around the house.  Glad I decided to give 'em a spin!   - DH

NOOTHGRUSH - January 10th, 1997 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

If you know me, you know I love Noothgrush.  Loooove 'em.  Love their music, love them as people, they rule.  So I'm quite stoked to be sharing this here, the soundboard recording of their set at the 5th Fiesta Grande, at 924 Gilman St in 1997.  I think I did a little quick EQ'ing on this, and it helped boost the badass-ness of this recording.  This is of course legally and morally required to be played at the highest possible volume, and listened to by the highest possible people. Get to it.    - DH

TOKEN ENTRY - June 18th, 1987 @ Crucial Chaos, WNYU, New York City, NY [FM]

More fantastic New York hardcore via TOKEN ENTRY!  I don't have much to write about them, if you are into late 80's NY hardcore, then you will be already familiar with this band.  For those not familiar, check out the upload.  New York hardcore was alive in kicking in the latter half of the 80's, despite some claims that hardcore was dead by 1986.  Token Entry seems to be a very key band from that era, and released some killer records.  Here they are from a local radio show, "Crucial Chaos", lots of rad bands of the time period have live sets from this show and they always sound pretty decent compared to typical raw live recordings I upload. So yeah, stoked to have the Token Entry set to share, check em out below, and if you dig it, check out those records!   - DH

NO FOR AN ANSWER - March 27th, 1988 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

Dang, NO FOR AN ANSWER is suuuuuuper straightedge.  Or were.  Maybe they still are.  I dunno, but they really were going hard for it back in the 80's.  I've never seen them live but I have a few live video and audio recordings and these guys were always sxe to the point of it being silly.  I know they are striving to be really true and earnest and sincere and all that, and maybe I'm just a dumb pothead, but in every live clip I've seen they had the goofiest straight edge stage banter.  This set has a couple great examples that just makes my skeleton want to jump out of my skin and run away.  Their 'anti casual sex, anti abortion, etc" song, and their weird and fawning monologue before their Agnostic Front cover finale (spoiler alert).  It's just too much.  And yet I can't help but smoke weed and play this stuff loud.  I'm a complicated person I suppose.  If you are too, crank this, smoke up, and have a laugh along with me.   - DH

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT - January 31st, 1987 @ The Farm, San Francisco, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

When I first uploaded this tape earlier today from ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT, I credited the set as being from December 27th, 1986, which was the huge Day At The Farm III show.  AA wasn't on the flyer so I was confused about whether or not they wound up playing that legendary show.  A few hours later Eric from AA corrected me.  They did NOT play the Day At The Farm show, and this set was mislabeled, the correct date being January 31st 1987.  It's still a sick soundboard, and was the last show from the American Paranoia era of the band.  Of course now that I know the correct date, I can see my buddy Shayne already uploaded this on his channel, 3 Cameras And A Microphone.  His is probably an upgrade as well as being digitized on superior equipment.  Fuck it though, I uploaded this already, and so up it shall stay.  And I'll be checking out Shayne's upload as well since the odds are it's a better copy.  Maybe you should look it up too.   - DH

VERBAL ABUSE - 1982 Demo

I don't really have much to say about this recording from VERBAL ABUSE.  The J Card just says 1982 Demo and that's it.  It sounds like a rough cut of their American Band record, and that's what a commenter on the video has said as well.  A great record by the way.  If anyone knows anything for certain about this, please comment below or in the Youtube vids comment section.  - DH

HELLNATION - January 10th, 1997 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

From the Chris Dodge collection of tapes is this bad boy, HELLNATION live at the Fiesta Grande #5, at 924 Gilman St in Berkeley, CA.  It's fast, it's noisy, the riffs are a blur, and it brings back a lot of 90's nostalgia hearing them again.  So burn a joint and crank this one up    - DH

THE FAITH - April 29th, 1983 @ WMUC, College Park, MD [FM]

THE FAITH live on the air, broadcast by  WMUC, a college radio station in College Park, Maryland, just outside of Washington D.C..  It was a bit loud and overdriven, and decided to not mess with it and keep it as is.  I think it sounds pretty killer and raw for what it is.  I don't have much to say about this, but play it loud like I am right now  - DH

CRUCIFIX - January 7th, 1984 @ CBGB's, New York City, NY [SOUNDBOARD]

Gonna keep this one short as I ain't got much time, but this recording speaks for itself anyway.  CRICIFIX isn't a band that needs any introduction.  So what we have here is a soundboard recording of them performing at the legendary CBGB's in early 1984.  How kickass is that?  Now, there are some technical difficulties in the early portion of the set, like the vocal mic seems to be cutting out during the first song, but it's punk so deal with it.  Things get sorted and the set rages on.  Play this one loud!  And if anyone has a flyer, photos, or knows the setlist, chime in below!   - DH

SONS OF ISHMAEL - August 7th, 1987 @ 924 Gilman St, Berkeley, CA [SOUNDBOARD]

SONS OF ISHMAEL hail from the mean streets of Toronto, Canada, and in 1987 came out to the equally mean streets of Berkeley, California  and played a show at 924 Gilman St, opening for Youth Of Today.  I'm not sure if they were on tour together, or if they just used the power of Canadian intimidation to bully their way onto the show.

So what we get here though is an uneven all over the place board mix that is typical for Gilman board recordings of the time.  I tried to balance things out via Izotope, but while I can find a general level where most of the recording will sound ok-ish, I can't do anything about the mix not settling.  So this may not be for everyone except those die hard SOI fans.  There are times when it sounds ok though, so it's good enough for an upload.    - DH

BOLD - January 2nd, 1987 @ Chatham Oaks, Danbury, CT [AUDIENCE]

Today's offering comes via a noisy audience recording of the New York hardcore band, BOLD.  It's not the best sounding, but for me at least it's passable, especially as I don't think I have any other Bold live recordings that I can remember off the top of my head.  For those that don't know, Bold is a youth crew hardcore band, and they are straightedge.  If you like sxe music, hopefully you are familiar with Bold, and that you dig this.  If you are more like me and like being stoned while listening to sxe music, then light one up and let 'er rip!  - DH

CRO-MAGS - July 16th, 1986 @ The Oasis, Sacramento, CA [AUDIENCE]

Here we go with an energetic set from the mighty CRO-MAGS!  Such a crazy cats of characters in this band, though I have really been enjoying Harley's social media posts to be quite honest.  But it's not all force of personality here, these guys bring the riffs for sure.  "Age Of Quarrel" is an excellent record in my opinion, and was probably just released or about to be released when this show happened, so this is CM at their height in my opinion.  Just a raging set, opening for GBH and playing alongside Verbal Abuse, Death Angel, and Sins Of The Flesh.  Thanks to whoever recorded this! - DH

COLERA - 1982 Demo

Today's post is an old raw demo recording from the Brazilian punk band COLERA.  I was never familiar with them, despite them being active since 1979.  Until I got this tape at least.  I have no info on the source of this tape, it's just a dub on a tape featuring old South American punk demos.  There is a handwritten J-card with song titles, I apologize for any spelling errors, I'm just copying them as they appear on the J-card.  Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about anything, or to add any additional info about this recording.

This is pretty killer though, if you like old, raw punk.  No fancy studio wizardry here, no drawn out songs either, just energetic and to the point punk.  Despite being unfamiliar with the band, I really dig this demo.  Perhaps I'll get around to checking out more of their discography.  For now this recording is hitting the spots, so I keep it in rotation, even though I have no idea what's being said in the lyrics.  Sometimes that's beauty of non-English bands, for me at least.  Can't judge their lyrical content, just gotta enjoy the emotion and mood of the vocals, and the music itself.  Sometimes, that's fine by me.   - DH

STIKKY - May 27th, 1988 @ The Place, Davis, CA [AUDIENCE]

I'm back to uploading again, so I hope folks still like noisy handheld recordings of old bands live shows and rehearsals as well as obscure demos.

So kicking things back off is STIKKY, live at The Place, in Davis, CA.  I don't know if there is anything remarkable about this set, it's a typical set recorded by someone who was clearly intelligent and had great taste in music, thanks mysterious genius!  Thankfully, a typical Stikky set is pretty damn fun to listen to, they are a hilarious band and they also have a lot of killer songs.  So yeah, cram this one in your earholes.  - DH
